Translation vs. Interpretation: What's the Difference?

The words get used interchangeably, but in language services they mean two distinct things — and knowing the difference helps you ask for the right service.

The core distinction

• Translation is written: converting text from one language to another — documents, websites, records, materials.
• Interpretation is spoken (or signed): converting speech in real time — a phone call, a meeting, a medical appointment, a court hearing.

A translator works with text and has time to research terminology and revise. An interpreter works live, rendering meaning on the spot. They’re related skills but different disciplines, and most professionals specialize in one.

Modes of interpretation

When you need interpretation, there are several modes, each suited to different situations:

• Over-the-phone interpretation (OPI) — an interpreter joins by phone, on demand. Best for unscheduled or brief encounters where speed matters.
• Video remote interpretation (VRI) — like OPI but with video, which matters for visual context and for sign language.
• On-site interpretation — an interpreter is physically present. Best for long, sensitive, or complex sessions.
• ASL and CART — American Sign Language interpretation and real-time captioning for deaf and hard-of-hearing participants.
• Simultaneous vs. consecutive — simultaneous (interpreting while the speaker talks, as at conferences) vs. consecutive (the speaker pauses for the interpreter, common in meetings and legal settings).

Which do you need?

• A document to file, publish, or record → translation.
• A live conversation, appointment, or hearing → interpretation (choose the mode by urgency, setting, and length).

Many organizations need both: translated intake forms and an interpreter for the appointment, for example.
