OPI vs. VRI: A Guide to Remote Interpretation
When someone in front of you speaks a language your staff doesn’t, you need an interpreter now — not in three days. Remote interpretation exists for exactly that moment. The two main forms are OPI and VRI.
OPI: over-the-phone interpretation
OPI connects you to a professional interpreter by phone, on demand, usually within seconds. It’s the workhorse of language access:
- Best for: unscheduled encounters, brief interactions, phone-based service, and the long tail of less common languages where an on-site interpreter isn’t practical.
- Strengths: fastest to connect, available around the clock, works anywhere there’s a phone.
- Limits: no visual context — not ideal for anything that depends on seeing documents, gestures, or a procedure.
VRI: video remote interpretation
VRI is remote interpretation over video. You get the speed of remote access plus a visual channel:
- Best for: encounters where seeing matters — a clinician showing something, reading body language, or when the person is Deaf and needs sign language interpretation.
- Strengths: near-OPI speed with visual context; essential for ASL.
- Limits: needs a stable connection and a screen; positioning matters.
When on-site is the right call
For long, sensitive, high-stakes, or complex sessions — a lengthy legal proceeding, a difficult diagnosis, an IEP meeting — an on-site interpreter is often best. Presence in the room supports rapport and nuance that remote can’t fully replicate.

- Quick, unscheduled, phone-friendly → OPI
- Needs visual context or ASL → VRI
- Long, sensitive, or complex → on-site
