Linguist Credentials

ATA-Certified Translators

The American Translators Association (ATA) certification is the most recognized professional credential in translation in the US. We staff every project with ATA-certified linguists who have demonstrated measurable proficiency in their language pairs.

What ATA Certification Means

ATA certification requires passing a rigorous blind exam scored by two independent graders. Passage rates run below 20%. ATA-certified translators have demonstrated professional-level competency in accuracy, terminology, and style — not just fluency.

Every Taika project is staffed with ATA-certified linguists in the relevant language pair and subject matter. We do not use machine translation or bilingual volunteers for certified work.

ATA Certification Covers

  • Written translation proficiency exam
  • Blind scoring by two independent raters
  • Subject-matter domain knowledge
  • Ongoing professional development requirements
  • Code of professional conduct and ethics
  • Accuracy, terminology, and style evaluation
Quality Management

ISO 17100 Quality Process

ISO 17100: Translation Services Standard

Our processes meet and exceed ISO 17100 requirements. We are not formally certified by a third-party ISO registrar, a distinction we disclose transparently.

ISO 17100 is the international standard for translation services, specifying requirements for translator competency, project management, revision, and quality control. Our Quality Management System follows ISO 17100 workflows on every project — Translation, Editing, and Proofreading (TEP) by qualified linguists, documented and tracked.

The practical difference between ISO 17100 compliance and formal certification is the third-party audit. Our quality outcomes — and our client base of Apple, Dell, and government entities — reflect a process that performs to standard.

Translation (T)

ATA-certified translator renders source content in target language with full terminological accuracy.

Editing (E)

A second qualified linguist reviews for accuracy, consistency, and completeness against the source.

Proofreading (P)

Final review for language quality, formatting, and target-language fluency before delivery.

QA Check

Project manager review for completeness, file format, and client-specific terminology compliance.

How We Select Linguists

Our Translator Vetting Process

Not every bilingual professional belongs on a medical, legal, or government project. Our vetting process filters for the credentials, experience, and subject-matter knowledge that high-stakes content demands.

1

ATA Certification Verification

We verify each linguist's ATA certification directly against the ATA public directory for their specific language pair. Certification in Spanish→English does not qualify a linguist for French→English work.

2

Domain Expertise Assessment

Medical translation requires medical knowledge. We assess each linguist's subject-matter background — clinical training, legal experience, pharmaceutical terminology — and match them only to projects in their domain.

3

Test Translation Review

New linguists complete a paid test translation evaluated by a senior editor for accuracy, style, and terminology before being assigned live projects.

4

NDA and Confidentiality Agreement

Every linguist signs a binding NDA covering client information, document content, and proprietary data. Healthcare linguists sign HIPAA-specific confidentiality agreements.

5

Ongoing Performance Tracking

We track quality scores, on-time delivery rates, and client feedback for every linguist. Performance below standard results in removal from the active roster.

Healthcare Compliance

HIPAA Compliance & Business Associate Agreements

Healthcare organizations translating Protected Health Information (PHI) must use a HIPAA-compliant translation provider. Taika Translations signs Business Associate Agreements (BAAs) and maintains HIPAA-compliant workflows for all medical translation.

Our HIPAA Compliance Measures

Business Associate Agreements

We sign BAAs with covered entities and business associates as required under 45 CFR §164.308. BAA available before work begins.

Linguist HIPAA Training

All healthcare linguists complete HIPAA awareness training and sign HIPAA-specific confidentiality agreements prior to assignment.

Secure File Transfer

PHI transmitted via encrypted channels only. No email attachments containing PHI. Secure file transfer portals with access controls.

Minimum Necessary Standard

Linguists receive only the minimum PHI necessary to complete the translation task, in compliance with the Minimum Necessary Rule.

Document Retention & Disposal

PHI retained only as long as required, then securely deleted per written retention and destruction policies.

Breach Notification Protocol

Written incident response and breach notification procedures in compliance with the HIPAA Breach Notification Rule.

Common Questions

Certifications & Quality FAQ

Q
Are your translators ATA members or ATA-certified?
Our linguists are ATA-certified — meaning they have passed the ATA's rigorous certification examination in their specific language pair. ATA certification is distinct from ATA membership: certification requires passing a proctored exam with a pass rate below 20%, while membership is open to any professional who joins. We use certified linguists, not merely members.
Q
Are you ISO 17100 certified?
Our quality management processes fully comply with ISO 17100 requirements for translator qualifications, revision, and project management. We are not formally certified by a third-party ISO registrar — a distinction we disclose transparently. Our TEP workflow (Translation, Editing, Proofreading by separate qualified linguists) meets ISO 17100 Section 5 production requirements on every project.
Q
Will you sign a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) for HIPAA?
Yes. We sign BAAs with covered entities and business associates as required under 45 CFR §164.308(b). Our BAA can be executed before work begins. Healthcare clients translating PHI should request a BAA as part of onboarding.
Q
How do I verify your GSA contract?
Our GSA MAS Contract number is 47QRAA18D00GT, NAICS 541930, SIN 541930. You can verify this contract on GSA Advantage at gsaadvantage.gov, or contact us for a copy of the contract documentation.
Q
Do your translations carry a certification statement?
Yes. Certified translations include a signed certification statement confirming that the translation is complete and accurate to the best of the translator's knowledge, including the translator's name, language pair, signature, and date. This format is accepted by USCIS, federal courts, state agencies, and most institutions requiring official certified translations.
Q
What languages do your ATA-certified translators cover?
Our network includes ATA-certified linguists covering the most in-demand US language pairs including Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Mandarin, Japanese, Italian, and more. For specialized language pairs, we partner with vetted, domain-expert translators who have equivalent credentials in their country of certification.
Q
What quality guarantee do you offer?
Every translation undergoes our full TEP review (Translation, Editing, Proofreading) before delivery. If a delivered translation contains accuracy errors attributable to our process, we will revise it at no charge. Government and medical clients may request additional quality review tiers.
